Because salt was so precious in olden days, spilling it was bad luck. The remedy to counter this was to toss additional grains of salt over one’s shoulder. (Isn’t that simply wasting more salt?) Here’s something interesting: if you take a close look at Leonardo da Vinci’s painting of The Last Supper you will notice that Judas Iscariot has knocked over a small bowl of salt with his elbow!
