I just read a magazine interview with German forester and author Peter Wohlleben (“The Hidden Life Of Trees: What They Feel, How They Communicate”). Although many people have labeled him delusional, he puts forth a some pretty strong scientific data to support his claim that trees “talk” to each other. One example he offers takes place in Africa. When giraffes start eating the leaves of the acacia, the tree is aware of the injury and sends out a distress signal in the form of ethylene gas. Neighboring acacias are alerted and they then begin pumping tannins into their leaves, which acts as a deterrent to herbivores. Fascinating stuff!...
